Six Ricans from the Bronx

Seis del Sur (Six from the South), also known as “Los Seis” (The Six), is a collective of six Bronx-based Nuyorican and Puerto Rican photojournalists and documentary photographers of renown who have documented the visual history of the South Bronx over the span of four decades—from the tumultuous period of the fire-for-hire “Bronx burning” epoch—to the present attempts at forced gentrification and cultural and historical whitewashing.

Voices of Seis del Sur

You can’t miss anything you’ve never had. I didn’t miss backyards, the private schools and white picket fences ‘cause I never had that. But I had my St. Mary’s Park, People’s Park, the abandoned buildings to run and play in, Johnny on the Pony, the pumps, and the multiple fires to entertain me.Joe Conzo, Jr.
To be sure, there are vacant buildings and empty rubble-strewn lots in my photographs, but what you won’t find in any of my images are poor people. Only victims of circumstance.Edwin Pagán
We came from a world of astonishing violence carefully taught to us by an indifferent country. Yet on the fields of rubble, in the empty temples of memory of the departed, we developed resilience, a sense of survival and justice that has served us all our lives.Ricky Flores
