Girls Bike Life, 2018.

I was nearing the end of my Documentary Practice and Visual Journalism program at the International Center of Photography when I stumbled upon a scene that captured my attention: two young girls riding bikes on the corner of Hunts Point and Garrison Avenues. The golden hour light was fading fast, and I was heading to meet my best friend, Isabel, at THE POINT, a community center where she ran youth programs and I was a teaching assistant in the photography classes I now co-run.

Looking back at the image, I’m reminded of my friendship with Isabel and the unique dynamics of adolescence. It’s a stage marked by both self-discovery and a growing awareness of the world’s judgments. One girl, seemingly aware of my gaze, exudes confidence, while the other, determined to conquer the tiny hill, embodies a spirit of resilience. These qualities mirror the support and encouragement Isabel and I have always offered each other. We’ve learned to stand tall in our convictions and to find strength in our friendship.

The trust between us blossomed organically, a silent bond forged through shared experiences. Our lives were forever changed by our connection. With me by her side, she was able to walk away from certain challenges, while I found the courage to step towards new opportunities, both personally and professionally. Our friendship has been a cornerstone of our lives, a testament to the power of human connection.
