Rubble. South Bronx. 1983-1986.
This image of the destruction of the buildings gives you an idea of what I faced and photographed at times after dropping my daughter Veronica off at United Bronx Parents daycare, located at 773 Prospect Avenue in the Bronx.
After I would drop her off , I would go with the intention of photographing and documenting; it was a gut feeling and an urgency to denounce what was happening in this part of the South Bronx. In the image you can see the Dyer Avenue and #2 Tinton train line adjacent more towards Prospect Avenue and longwood where the daycare was located. Unfortunately, these photos are over 40 years old and the plastic negative sleeves where I wrote down the information, has since disappeared.
In one of my old notebooks I wrote: “It’s been 7 months since I have stepped foot on these areas, I am certain when I go back to take pictures, I will notice the change (01/1985.) “
The James Polite Blvd was a location that was to be rebuilt with new affordable houses. I never got mine.
